Watch Your Head! –A Tale of Height, Heat and Hospitality
“Watch your head! Watch your head!” Naoko would call out from behind Bryant every time he went in or out of a room. Being tall, he often bumped his head on the doors of traditional Japanese houses unless he ducked.
Originally from New Orleans, he commented, “New Orleans is hot, but Kyoto is hot and humid.” Kyoto is a basin surrounded by mountains, so it gets very hot and humid in the summer.
For me and Naoko, both elderly Kyoto residents, walking around in the blazing sun is something we try to avoid as much as possible. We’ve made it a habit to spend our days wandering around air-conditioned shopping malls.
Bryant was the only participant in today’s workshop. He chose Komurasaki An based on recommendations from Peter and Anna, who had previously attended our workshops. Having been recommended by them means our workshops are recognized, which gives me a little boost of confidence!
He listened attentively throughout the workshop and asked many questions. However, I regret that I couldn’t provide fully satisfactory answers due to my lack of English proficiency. I’ll look up the parts I couldn’t explain well later and make sure I can explain them properly next time!
I’m really frustrated that I can’t explain myself well in English. I wish I could convey my thoughts as clearly as I can in Japanese. I’m grateful for Brian’s patience. I’ll definitely work on my English skills so that I can have a better conversation next time. Please come visit Komurasaki An again.
